Why We’re Betting on School Cricket

Why We’re Betting on School Cricket

Before the stadiums, the crowds and the television cameras, there is usually something much smaller.

A school ground.

A first bat.

A teacher who says, “Go on, give it a try.”

A group of friends arguing about who gets to bat first.

That's where sport really begins.

And that's exactly why I believe schools have such an important role to play in what we're building at Kabuni.

When people talk about developing cricket, the conversation naturally moves towards finding the next great player.

Of course, discovering talent is exciting. Maybe somewhere on a school ground today is a future international cricketer who simply hasn't been given their opportunity yet.

But I think there's a bigger opportunity than that.

Because not every child who plays cricket needs to become a professional cricketer for cricket to change their life.

A shy child can find confidence.

Someone struggling to fit in can find a team.

Someone can discover what they're good at.

And someone else might simply find something they love doing every Saturday for the rest of their life.

All of those outcomes matter.

But first, they need somewhere to play.

That's where School Cricket comes in.

With Kabuni and the Kabuni Premier League, we want to bring schools into a much bigger cricketing experience - connecting young players with teams, franchise owners, coaches and Super Coaches who can inspire them.

I want pulling on a KPL shirt to mean something.

I want a young player to remember the first time they represented their team. I want them to talk about the match they nearly won, the teammate who made everyone laugh, the coach who believed in them and the shot they somehow managed to hit perfectly.

Because those are the stories we remember.

Years later, most of us don't remember the score.

We remember how it felt.

That's why we're betting on School Cricket.

Because if we want to create the next generation of people who love this game, we have to start where that love so often begins.

At school.
